The new regime in Carolina is moving on from a past second-round pick.
The Panthers released receiver Terrace Marshall as part of their cutdown to 53 players on Tuesday, the team announced.
Carolina also announced on Tuesday that second-round running back Jonathon Brooks, who tore his ACL late last season at Texas, will start the season on the team's non-football injury list.
Marshall joined Carolina in 2021 as a second-round pick (59th overall) out of LSU, where he emerged as a playmaking wideout, catching 106 passes for 1,594 yards and 23 touchdowns over two and a half seasons with the Tigers (2018-2020). The Panthers selected him with the hopes he'd emerge as a No. 3 receiver in a core that featured DJ Moore and Robby Anderson (now known as Robbie Chosen), but that never quite materialized for Marshall, who saw just 30 targets in 13 games as a rookie, finishing with 17 catches for 138 yards.
2021 might as well be ancient history for the Panthers. Matt Rhule oversaw the operation back then, working in tandem with GM Scott Fitterer in what was ultimately a failed partnership. Marshall's usage never quite fit his draft slot, either; Rhule made a habit of replacing Marshall with the likes of Shi Smith and others during their time spent together, and by the time Frank Reich arrived as head coach in 2023, the Panthers had already started looking elsewhere at the position, acquiring veteran Adam Thielen and drafting Jonathan Mingo to run routes for rookie quarterback Bryce Young in 2023.
Reich's tenure lasted just 11 games, clearing the way for yet another regime change. New coach Dave Canales and GM Dan Morgan gave Marshall one more camp and preseason to try to earn a roster spot, but with Mingo showing signs of improvement and two new arrivals, Diontae Johnson and rookie Xavier Legette, occupying roster spots ahead of Marshall, he was ultimately squeezed out after just three seasons with the Panthers.
Marshall leaves Carolina with 64 catches for 767 yards and one touchdown logged over three seasons, which pales in comparison with his final season at LSU. Carolina, meanwhile, will move ahead with a top four of Johnson, Legette, Thielen and Mingo.
We'll see if Marshall finds a job elsewhere following final cuts.
