Cowboys denied Bears permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coach vacancy

Is Mike McCarthy staying in Dallas?

That's still to be determined, but he's not going to Chicago anytime soon.

The Cowboys denied the Bears' request to interview McCarthy for their open head coach position, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.

On Monday, NFL Network's Jane Slater reported the Bears requested an interview with McCarthy, but he remains under contract with the Cowboys until Jan. 14. So, for now, whether the Cowboys re-sign him, continue to mull things over or move on from McCarthy remains to be seen. Tuesday's refusal to grant the Bears permission could be an indication McCarthy will be back.

That's far from official, though.

Coming off a disappointing 7-10 season, McCarthy has drawn praise from owner Jerry Jones, along with the support of star players Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons despite the hardships.

So, despite seemingly being on the hot seat since the 2024 campaign started due to a wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers to end the 2023 season, McCarthy has clearly endeared himself to many in the Cowboys organization.

Because the Cowboys retain exclusivity rights, they were able to block the Bears' request.

It would've been an interesting proposition of McCarthy, who was the Packers head coach for the majority of his career, joining the Bears.

Until Jan. 14 at the least, McCarthy remains the Cowboys head coach.
